id=\"viewer-xpv4e294\">\u4f51\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We live in a world where we often see things as one thing or another thing:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>democrat or republican\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>black or white\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>right or wrong\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>good or bad\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>believer or unbeliever\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>faithful or unfaithful\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>us or them\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If we primarily see life in a binary way\u2026I wonder if it makes it difficult for us to understand a new vision that Jesus might be offering us today.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One commandment\u2026one humanity\u2026one God.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grace and peace to you, my siblings in Christ&#8211; from our Lord and Savior Jesus as our Christ!&nbsp; Amen.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not easy.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even the first part of Jesus\u2019 response refers to two commandments: a first one\u2026and a second one.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The problem with seeing them as two separate commandments is that when we can\u2019t find a way for both to exist at the same time that we might be fooled into thinking that one can actually be accomplished without the other.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let me show you what it might look likes from both sides and see if this has ever happened to us before\u2026&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Have we ever found it too hard to show enough grace or love to someone\u2026maybe because a certain position that they held that was different than ours or different from what we thought God would want\u2026or maybe because they betrayed us in some way\u2026or even broke one of the 10-commandments?&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How did we react?&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Did we ever justify a non-loving attitude towards our neighbor in favor of our need to love God first?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s see if we\u2019ve ever made a mistake the other way.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Have we ever allowed a social justice position to be the litmus test for determining whether or not someone is following the right God or not\u2026or whether they are the same kind of Christian that we are?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It would be good for us to remember that although Jesus begins by talking about two commandments\u2026Jesus ends by summarizing that these are actually only one commandment.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus says: \u201c\u2026there is no other <strong><em>commandment<\/em><\/strong> greater than these\u201d (v 31).&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, I don\u2019t think that this nuance comes through in Chinese\u2026but it does in Greek and it can in English.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The word \u201ccommandment\u201d is a noun that is singular\u2026not plural.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do any of these ways feel familiar?&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ll confess that that they feel familiar to me!&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have not been an expert in seeing these two commandments as one commandment that really cannot be separated.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I confess that I have sometimes too easily given up on really loving someone in favor of God\u2019s laws.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I confess that I have been guilty of determining if someone is an insider or outsider based on where they land on social justice issues.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve confessed a lot here!&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I wonder, though, if this is exactly where we need to start\u2026with confession.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe when we begin with confession we might be the most open to seeing differently and be ready to be challenged, surprised, and even changed.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a confessing heart, I admit that I have a hard time seeing and that if I am going to be able to see a new way at all I will need to do it with God\u2019s help.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nathan was asking me a few days ago about what kind of service we might be when this congregation welcomes in a new pastor.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A phrase that you will hear repeated throughout that service, when it comes, will be: \u201cI will with the help of God.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There will be times when we will invite the pastor to respond this way.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There will also be times when we will ask you as the congregation to respond in the same way.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe confession is the exact place where we should start.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I wonder if there is something else that we might do after confessing.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe we should spend time and energy practicing a way of seeing and understanding in ways that we are not used to seeing and understanding.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Without practicing, can we ever expect to learn something new?&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I was little, I had to practice a lot to be able to learn how to walk.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t we also need to practice to learn how to play the piano, or to be good at math, or to be physically fit?&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe we need to practice a different way of loving if we ever hope to love as Christ hopes that we can love through this one commandment that cannot be separated.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let me share one way that we might practice loving God and each other differently with one commandment that cannot be separated.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m going to share something from an author named Diana Butler Bass but the model of loving comes from Jesus.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For several centuries, Western people have generally assumed that religious commitment begins when one believes certain things.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That belief then leads to proper behavior like learning new prayers, serving the poor, giving up smoking or drinking, and trying to be a better person.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, you become a member and join the church.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The order is believing, behaving, and belonging.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The question that we might ask is: \u201cWhen it came to his own disciples, did Jesus do it this way?\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember\u2026this is a Jesus that is trying to challenge us to see two commandments now as one commandment that is inseparable.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s take a closer look at what Jesus did with his disciples.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back in the first chapter of Mark, Mark 1:16, Mark says: <em>\u201cAs Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea\u2014for they were fisherman. And Jesus said to them, \u201cFollow me and I will make you fish for people.\u201d\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He didn\u2019t ask for their resume.&nbsp; He didn\u2019t ask what they believed.&nbsp; He didn\u2019t check to see if they were democrats or republicans, believers or unbelievers, if they had a degree or not, white or black or Asian\u2026or anything that made the acceptable or unacceptable.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus was forming a community and simply said \u201cfollow me\u201d\u2026you belong\u2026yes, you Simon, you Andrew, you James, you John\u2026you belong!&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sure, Peter, \u201cthe rock,\u201d would make a confession that Jesus is the Messiah and Jesus said that upon \u201cthis rock\u201d I will build my church\u2026but that was much later.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus, in God\u2019s vision for a new humanity and in the radical love of God, first says: \u201cYou belong!\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One commandment that cannot be separated.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe because the love that they were experiencing with Jesus was so radically different that they responded the way that they did: <em>\u201cImmediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with hired men, and followed him\u201d<\/em> (v 20).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The early community that followed Jesus was a community of practice.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus\u2019 followers did not sit around a fire and listen to lectures on Christian theology.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They listened to stories that taught them how to act toward one another and what to do in the world.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They healed people, offered hospitality, prayed together, challenged traditional practices and rituals, ministered to the sick, comforted the grieving, fasted, and forgave. These actions opened up a new vision of God.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By doing things together, they began to see differently.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus didn\u2019t come along and say, \u201cHave faith and everything will get better.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus\u2019 disciples were poor.&nbsp; They were oppressed by one of history\u2019s most vicious empires.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Have faith?&nbsp; Have faith in what?&nbsp; Have faith in a Messiah that is late in arriving?&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, when Jesus walked by he said, \u201cFollow me\u201d\u2026and he gave them something to do.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First he showed them how to do it\u2026and then it was their turn to practice it.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If they were hoping that the world would somehow magically change\u2026Jesus was now inviting them to change the world\u2026\u201con earth as it is in heaven.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What kind of radical love do we need to practice so that we can really see the new world that God is dreaming about?&nbsp; One commandment that cannot be separated.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peter\u2019s confession of faith grew out of his friendship with Jesus and the things that they had done together.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The confession came out of the experience of being a part of community where he belonged and was invited to practice a different way of living and loving \u201cyour neighbor as yourself.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It did not come from a doctrine or a theology book.&nbsp; It came from the Spirit.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It came from belonging to a community, having the change to practice deep and radical love for all, and that then allowed him to confess: \u201cYou are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe if it is really just one commandment that cannot be separated, and we hope to understand this new vision of God for a new humanity made in God\u2019s image, maybe the order in which Jesus did his ministry really matters.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As you discern a new partner and pastor for ministry today, I encourage you to continue to be grounded in Christ in your discernment and how you welcome a new partner to minister with and among you.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our one God invites us to live into one new humanity guided one
